2 days agoFree-agent running back Rashaad Penny plans to sign an undisclosed deal with the Carolina Panthers, according to a source. The former first-round pick will reunite with head coach Dave Canales from their time together with the Seattle Seahawks. Penny will likely officially sign after the team's rookie minicamp, which wraps up on May 12. The 28-year-old from San Diego State was the 27th overall pick in 2018. Penny spent the first five years of his career in Seattle, displaying home run-hitting ability on the ground but struggling to stay healthy, appearing in just 42 games (11 starts). He played in just three games with the Eagles in 2023 and had only 11 carries for 33 yards. Penny will be joining another crowded backfield in Carolina that already consists of Chuba Hubbard, Miles Sanders and rookie Jonathon Brooks, so he's not going to be on the fantasy radar.Source: ESPN.com - Jeremy Fowler

2 days agoAt Kansas Speedway on Sunday evening, it appeared as though Denny Hamlin was going to win his second straight NASCAR Cup Series race, as he was cruising to victory in the final stages of the AdventHealth 400 before an untimely caution came out due to Kyle Busch spinning. During the caution, the field pitted, and although Hamlin came out of the pits as the leader, he got taken over on the restart and ultimately wound up with a fifth-place finish. Hamlin led a race-high 71 laps in the event. In an interview after the race, Denny stated, "I don't think there was any dispute that we were the fastest car." He added, "I really wanted to get another one there, and had we not had that caution, it was going to happen."Source: Frontstretch
2 days agoSan Francisco Giants right-hander Logan Webb had another rough outing Sunday in the 5-4 loss against the Philadelphia Phillies. Webb threw for four innings on Sunday, allowing five runs, one homer, and six hits, with six strikeouts and two walks. This makes it his second straight game where he was pulled early after allowing multiple runs. The 27-year-old right-handed pitcher recorded two clean starts before the Boston Red Sox series but has taken a turn for the worst. He now owns a 3.50 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, and a 36: 12 K: BB across 46 1/3 innings in 2024. Webb's next projected start is against the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday, and they hold a batting average of .210 against right-handed pitchers, giving Webb a perfect bounce-back spot as a streaming option for fantasy managers.Source: ESPN.com
2 days agoPhiladelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper hit a three-run homer Sunday in the 5-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Harper went 1-for-3, with his only hit being the three-run homer off Logan Webb in the third inning. He is hitting .234 (26-for-111) with five doubles, seven homers, 17 runs, 21 RBI, 24 walks, and 31 strikeouts in 31 games. Fantasy managers should continue to roll with Harper, and he will have favorable matchups in Week 7, facing the Giants, Toronto Blue Jays, and ending it against the Miami Marlins.Source: MLB.com
2 days agoAlexandre Pantoja remained the flyweight champion after defeating Steve Erceg via unanimous decision in the main event of UFC 301 on Saturday. The first three rounds were extremely close but leaned toward Pantoja, while Erceg dominated the fourth round. With less than two minutes remaining, Erceg went for a takedown, but Pantoja quickly reversed and landed on top, closing the fight with some ground-and-pound. In 25 minutes of back-and-forth action, Pantoja landed nine takedowns and 125 significant strikes. Pantoja is the first champion since Demetrious Johnson was the inaugural champion actually to defend the title twice with victories in both bouts.Source: UFC
2 days agoTexas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said on Saturday that right-hander Max Scherzer (back, thumb) is still in a holding pattern until his right-thumb soreness subsides. The Rangers pushed Scherzer's scheduled minor-league rehab start for Double-A Frisco on April 30 back a few days because of his thumb soreness. He traveled with the team to Kansas City on Friday but has yet to throw off a mound since being pushed back. "He's not at a point where he can play catch. Every day he's getting a bit better, but it's slower than he would like. You can't rush it. It's day to day with this thing before he gets on the mound," Bochy said. Scherzer was originally slated to return in late June/early July after having surgery on his back for a herniated disc on Dec. 15, but his timeline has accelerated and he should be able to rejoin Texas' rotation in May, barring any further setbacks.Source: MLB.com
2 days agoSteve Erceg came up short at UFC 301, losing to flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja in his first-ever UFC title fight. It was a back-and-forth war over five rounds, and it seemed like the fight would be decided in a fifth and final round. In the end, it was Pantoja who won via unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46). In 25 minutes of action, Erceg landed a takedown and 111 significant strikes. With the loss, Erceg's UFC record is 3-1.Source: UFC
2 days agoIhor Potieria suffered a first-round submission loss to Michel Pereira at UFC 301. Within moments, Pereira dropped Potieria to the ground. There was some controversy shortly after that as Pereira went for a backflip and landed with his shin on Potieria's head. As Potieria was standing up he got caught in a standing guillotine. In 54 seconds of action, Potieria landed only two significant strikes. There is a debate among fans after the fight over whether Pereira's knee strike was legal and how much it affected Potieria. 2 days agoMichel Pereira extended his winning streak to eight by submitting Ihor Potieria in the first round at UFC 301. After knocking down Potieria, Pereira went for his signature backflip that ended with his knee connecting with Potieria's face. As Potieria attempted to get up, Pereira caught him with a standing guillotine choke which ended the fight. In 54 seconds of action, Pereira landed six significant strikes.Source: UFC
2 days agoPaul Craig looked to get his career back on track by ending Caio Borralho's 14-fight win streak at UFC 301. However, it didn't go his way as he was knocked out by Borralho in the first round. Borralho landed a two-punch combination that hurt Craig, before knocking him out with a straight right. In 2:10 of action, Craig landed 22 significant strikes. With the loss, Craig falls into a two-fight skid and moves to 1-2 at middleweight in the UFC.Source: UFC
2 days agoTexas Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (groin), who was placed on the 15-day injured list after leaving his start last Thursday with a right-groin strain, isn't expected to be on the IL for long or need a minor-league rehab assignment once he's able to return. "He's feeling pretty good. We're optimistic this will be a short little stint on the IL. We are just making sure we are covering all the bases," manager Bruce Bochy said. It's great news for the Rangers and Eovaldi's fantasy managers. The veteran hurler needs to be stashed in all fantasy formats after he's started the season with a 2-2 record with a 2.61 ERA in his seven starts. Until Eovaldi returns, there's a chance pitching prospect Jack Leiter will take his spot in Texas' starting rotation.Source: MLB.com
2 days agoSeattle Mariners right-hander George Kirby (knee) has been cleared to make his next start this Wednesday to face the Twins in Minnesota. Kirby threw 88 pitches in his most recent start last Friday against the Houston Astros but dealt with a right-knee injury, which put him up in the air to make his next start. Apparently the 26-year-old's injury isn't serious enough to keep him from taking his next turn in Seattle's rotation, but fantasy managers may want to be a little extra careful when deploying him against a Twins team that just had their 12-game winning streak snapped on Sunday by the Boston Red Sox. Kirby has been good in his seven starts so far in 2024, going 3-2 with a 3.76 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 41 strikeouts in 38 1/3 innings, so fantasy managers in most single-year leagues will probably want to keep him in their starting lineups.Source: MLB.com
2 days agoCincinnati Reds right-hander Frankie Montas (forearm) is listed as the team's starter for Tuesday's contest against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks. It appears Montas will be activated from the injured list to make his return to Cincy's starting rotation on Tuesday. He's been on the IL since April 22 with a right-forearm issue and threw a couple of bullpen sessions last week. The fact that he didn't make any minor-league rehab starts before being thrown back into the fire should make fantasy managers hesitant to throw him back into their starting lineups immediately, especially against an Arizona offense that currently ranks 12th in baseball with a .714 OPS. The 31-year-old is attempting to bounce back from injuries the last two years and has so far gone 2-2 with the Reds with a 4.19 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 14 K's in 19 1/3 innings over five starts.Source: MLB.com
2 days agoBaltimore Orioles starting pitcher Dean Kremer struck out six in a dominating fashion on Sunday in the 11-1 win against the Cincinnati Reds. Kremer continued racking up the strikeouts while recording his third-straight win, moving to 3-2 on the season. He pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out six. Kremer holds a 3.57 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and a 37:11 K: BB in seven starts. Since getting torched for eight runs by the Brewers on April 13, Kremer has bounced back and allowed seven runs (2.63 ERA) over his previous four starts (24 innings). The 28-year-old next projected start is against the Arizona Diamondbacks, who have had more difficulties against right-handed pitchers this season, making Kremer a solid streamer in most league formats.Source: ESPN.com
2 days agoKansas City Royals left-hander Cole Ragans (calf) is slated to make his next start on Monday against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. Ragans dealt with cramping in his left calf in his most recent start last Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays after throwing 6 2/3 innings. It was obviously just a minor injury, and the 26-year-old southpaw is ready to go for his next turn through KC's rotation. With a two-start week on tap, fantasy managers are going to want to lock Ragans into their starting lineups this week despite coming off an injury in his last start. He's set to face the Los Angeles Angels this Saturday. Ragans is currently 2-2 with a 3.44 ERA and 1.36 WHIP while walking 13 and striking out 46 in 36 2/3 innings over his first seven starts of the season.Source: MLB.com
2 days agoBoston Red Sox right-hander Chris Martin (shoulder) hasn't pitched since last Wednesday and is a candidate to land on the injured list this week because of lingering soreness in his left shoulder. The Red Sox are concerned the injury will alter his mechanics and lead to issues with his right throwing arm. The good news is that the 37-year-old's injury isn't to his throwing arm, but nevertheless, he may be forced to miss a couple of weeks. The Red Sox have a scheduled day off on Monday, so if Martin does go on the IL, that move will likely come on Tuesday before the series opener against the Braves in Atlanta. Martin has so far gone 1-1 on the season with a 5.11 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 13 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings out of Boston's bullpen.Source: The Boston Globe - Pete Abraham
2 days agoOakland Athletics outfielder Esteury Ruiz (wrist) is going for an MRI exam on Monday on his left wrist after the way he landed on a diving catch in the outfield in Saturday's game against the Miami Marlins. Manager Mark Kotsay wouldn't say if Ruiz was unavailable for the series finale against Miami on Sunday. The 25-year-old never ended up appearing in Sunday's 12-3 loss, and there's a good chance he won't be available for the series opener on Monday against the division-rival Texas Rangers, either. How much additional time the speedster will miss will depend on the results of his MRI. Since being sent down to the minors early in the year, Ruiz has returned to hit just .229 (8-for-35) with two home runs, six RBI and three stolen bases in 15 games. As long as he's playing regularly for Oakland, he's valuable in fantasy for his wheels.Source: Jessica Kleinschmidt
2 days agoLos Angeles Dodgers left-hander James Paxton recorded his fourth win of the season against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday in a 5-1 victory. Paxton went 6 ⅓ innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks while striking out three. He has now recorded back-to-back wins in two starts. The 35-year-old has pitched 32 ⅓ innings in six starts, holding a 3.06 ERA with a 5.01 K/9 and 6.68 BB/9 rate. His next projected start is against the San Diego Padres, who had already given him troubles earlier this season. Despite surrendering eight walks in last start against the Padres, Paxton has pitched well enough recently to be used as a streamer in most league formats.Source: MLB.com
2 days agoNew York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu (foot) hit a little bit over the weekend on Saturday and Sunday, according to manager Aaron Boone, but the skipper wasn't ready to say whether LeMahieu is close to going on a minor-league rehab assignment. "I don't know if he's that close to being ready for rehab," Boone said. It's good news that LeMahieu is doing baseball activities, but the 35-year-old veteran still doesn't appear close to coming off the injured list to make his 2024 debut. He was originally shut down late in April after more swelling in his injured foot. When healthy, LeMahieu is expected to be the team's starter at third base while hitting at the top of the batting order, but fantasy managers are running out of patience. Until LeMahieu is able to return, Oswaldo Cabrera will continue to see most of the playing time at the hot corner in the Bronx.Source: The Athletic - Chris Kirschner
2 days agoMiami Marlins outfielder Nick Gordon had a day at the plate in Sunday's 12-3 victory against the Oakland A's. Gordon went 4-for-4 with one homer, two runs, and three RBI with one walk. The 28-year-old has had a rough start to the season, hitting .207 (17-for-82) with three doubles, four homers, eight runs, 15 RBI, four walks, and 17 strikeouts in 31 games this season. On Monday, Miami will start a three-game road trip against the Los Angeles Dodgers, bringing more challenges for the struggling team. Gordon does frequent the starting lineup but is mainly an option in NL-Only or deep-league formats.Source: MLB.com
2 days agoCarolina Hurricanes center Sebastian Aho finished Sunday's 4-3 loss in Game 1 against the Rangers with two assists. He helped Jaccob Slavin get an equalizer early in the game and collected his second assist when Seth Jarvis scored the final goal late in the third. The Hurricanes star broke a mini-slump with the effort, having gone scoreless in the final two games of the first-round series against the Islanders. Aho also celebrated a franchise record on Sunday, passing Ron Francis for the most points in series-opening games in Hurricanes/Whalers history. He's on two goals and five points through his first six postseason appearances in 2024.Source: ESPN
2 days agoNew York Rangers center Mika Zibanejad led the charge as the team opened its second-round series against Carolina with a 4-3 victory at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. Zibanejad needed less than three minutes of action at the start of the game to open the scoring and totaled two goals and an assist in the contest. He had all of his points in the first period, collecting two with the man advantage. This was Zibanejad's second career three-point playoff game. After picking up only four points (one goal, three assists) in seven postseason appearances a year ago, Zibanejad has been a changed man in the 2024 playoffs with a team-high 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in five games.Source: ESPN
2 days agoDallas Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger played his part in Sunday's 2-1 victory in Game 7 against Vegas with 22 saves. Brett Howden found a way past him late in the second period, but Oettinger played a rock-solid game from start to finish. The Stars' No. 1 had a big role in the team's comeback from a 2-0 deficit in the series, allowing only eight goals across the final five games. He finished the series with a 1.95 goals-against average and a .925 save percentage. Oettinger will need to tame the Avalanche's fierce offense in Round 2. He was 1-2-0 in the matchup during the regular season, giving up nearly five goals per game (4.74).Source: ESPN
2 days agoDallas Stars center Radek Faksa scored the decisive goal as the team took down Vegas 2-1 in Sunday's Game 7. After missing three games with an undisclosed injury and being a healthy scratch for Game 6 of the series, Faksa popped up with a memorable goal with 44 seconds played in the third period. Faksa's playoff goals don't come around too often, with this being only his ninth postseason marker in 74 appearances. Sunday's goal gave him 20 career postseason points.Source: ESPN
2 days agoFlorida Panthers center Sam Bennett (upper body) won't be available for the start of the second-round series against Boston. He was initially expected to be good to go for Monday's Game 1, but Panthers head coach Paul Maurice has officially ruled Bennett out, adding that he is considered day-to-day. The 27-year-old was sidelined for the final three games of the opening-round series against Tampa Bay. Before suffering an upper-body injury on April 23, Bennett notched a goal and an assist across the first two games of the series. Anton Lundell will continue to fill in for him as the second-line center on Monday.Source: David Dwork
2 days agoNoah Gragson, who started third in Sunday's AdventHealth 400, finished in ninth place, marking his first top-10 finish at Kansas in the Cup Series. Despite having a strong weekend from the racing side, in fantasy, he was a disappointment. While a ninth-place finish sounds great, it comes with a consequence when you start the race so high and offer little in terms of laps led and fastest laps to offset the loss of place differential. This is what happened with Gragson in this weekend's race, as he only managed to record two fastest laps on the day, finishing with a score of 29.90 on DraftKings, but at a salary of $7,400. Nevertheless, the big takeaway from this race is that the Stewart-Haas Racing star has now finished in the top 10 in three consecutive races, making him a driver that we will want to continue to take notice of moving forward, perhaps even as soon as this weekend when the Cup Series returns to Darlington Raceway for the Goodyear 400 on Sunday afternoon.Source: Jayski.com
2 days agoVancouver Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko (knee) has been ruled out for Game 1 of the second-round series against Edmonton. He was sidelined for the final five games against Nashville in the opening round and won't be ready for the start of the new series either. Game 1 is scheduled for Wednesday. Arturs Silovs is on track to make his fourth consecutive start between the sticks. The 23-year-old has filled in admirably for Demko, going 2-1-o against the Predators with one shutout and only five total goals allowed. But he faces a much tougher challenge in the second round against Connor McDavid & Co.Source: Brendan Bachelor
2 days agoNew Orleans Pelicans guard/forward Brandon Ingram isn't expected to be extended by the team this offseason. The 2020 All-Star is eligible to sign a four-year, $208 million deal. However, it looks like the Pelicans are ready to move on from Ingram, who has one year left to go on his current contract. Ingram, who will be making around $36 million in 2024-25, has enjoyed a solid career in New Orleans, averaging 23.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.2 assists across five seasons. But the 26-year-old has battled various injuries, with 64 regular-season appearances in 2023-24 being the most he has managed across a single campaign, and he was a major letdown for the team in the 2024 playoffs.Source: Evan Sidery
