Padres Sign Alfonso Rivas To Minor-League Deal
2 years agoThe San Diego Padres signed free-agent first baseman Alfonso Rivas to a minor-league deal on Thursday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training after he was released by the Chicago Cubs last week. The 26-year-old played in 101 games for the Cubs last season in his second year in the majors and hit .235/.322/.307 with a .628 OPS, three home runs, 25 RBI, 27 runs scored and six stolen bases in 287 plate appearances. Rivas will have a chance to impress the Padres coaching staff this spring, and he could eventually find his way onto the major-league roster in 2023, as the Padres depth at first base is a bit lacking behind Jake Cronenworth and Matt Carpenter, who both also hit left-handed like Rivas.
