Padres Close To Signing Robinson Cano
3 years agoThe San Diego Padres are close to signing free-agent second baseman Robinson Cano, according to sources. The New York Mets released Cano on Sunday after he hit only .195 with one home run, three RBI and three runs scored in his first 12 games of the season. However, the 39-year-old had an .896 OPS in 2020 before he was suspended for all of the 2021 season, and the left-handed-hitting veteran also swung a hot bat this spring training. Cano is clearly past his prime, but the Padres haven't gotten much production out of their designated hitter spot in the early going, and he could also provide depth at the keystone behind the struggling Jake Cronenworth. It's still unlikely that Cano would provide consistent fantasy stat lines in a part-time role in San Diego.
