Nick Gonzales Taken By Bucs At No. 7
5 years agoThe Pittsburgh Pirates selected New Mexico State shortstop Nick Gonzales with the seventh overall pick in the 2020 MLB draft on Wednesday. Gonzales wasn't on the radar out of high school and was a walk-on in college, but he has done nothing but hit in college. He won the Cape Cod MVP last summer by hitting .351/.451/.630 and immediately vaulted himself into the first-round conversation. The 5-foot-10 infielder has a short and compact swing and elite bat speed. Gonzales might not be a big home run guy at the next level, though, and some evaluators don't think he has the arm or range to play shortstop at the next level. He has drawn comparisons to Brewers second baseman Keston Hiura at second base.
