Mets Could Be More Likely To Land Trevor Bauer
4 years agoThe New York Mets trade of starting pitcher Steven Matz to the Toronto Blue Jays doesn't necessarily mean that free-agent right-hander Trevor Bauer will be signing with New York, but it does open the door wider. The Mets now have an extra $5.2 million of payroll space and a vacancy in the starting rotation. One of the biggest barriers to signing Bauer has been the $210 million competitive balance tax threshold, and they were sitting roughly $27 million below the mark before the Matz trade. However, the Mets are still looking for an upgrade in center field and are considering extensions for shortstop Francisco Lindor and outfielder Michael Conforto. As far as Toronto, although they could still add another pitcher in the lower tier of free agents, their heavy lifting is done, meaning they are unlikely to sign Bauer. The 2020 National League Cy Young winner could be down to the Mets and Dodgers.
