Max Muncy 2022 Player Outlook: Health Concerns Make Him A Potential Steal
3 years agoFew hitters were tougher for pitchers to deal with in 2021 than Muncy, who hit 36 homers and drove in 94 runs in 592 plate appearances for the Dodgers. He was arguably the best hitter in the league in terms of the power and contact combination with his elite 16.1% Brl% and 78% contact rate. It is pretty rare to find a guy striking out so rarely (20.4%) while still hitting homers at an elite rate (16.3 PA/HR). He also posted another high walk rate (14%), which he used to post yet another elite OBP of .368. There are very few holes to poke in Muncy's game at the plate. The problem is the health concerns. He was injured in a collision at first base on the regular season's final day, and missed all of the playoffs. That later was revealed to be a torn UCL, which is threatening to cause him to miss the beginning of the 2022 season. Any positive news about the elbow should (and will) push his ADP up substantially, which could make him a massive steal in early drafts. No matter where you get Muncy, the only way you will be disappointed is if the health does not return, and that is a gamble you should be willing to take.
