Matt Adams Joins Nationals As First Base Depth
7 years agoMatt Adams is this year's Adam Lind for the Nationals. Adams hit 19 home runs in 314 plate appearances once he came over to the Braves last season. That might sound impressive but only six of those home runs came after July 1st. Jeff Sullivan over at Fan Graphs notes that Adams profiles almost exactly like Adam Lind, the 2017 back-up first baseman, mashing righties (career wRC+ 123) and whiffing quite badly against lefties (career wRC+ of 58). The reason the Nats may have jettisoned Lind for Adams is the five year age difference between the two. Ryan Zimmerman isn't the healthiest of guys and is usually rested once or twice a week. Owners who can make daily roster changes could roll the dice whenever Adams hits against a right-handed pitcher.
