Early on in Tuesday’s series opener between the Washington Nationals and New York Yankees, starter Masahiro Tanaka labored. The 29-year-old allowed a home run in the first inning, followed by a pair of doubles and a single in the second inning, resulting in two more runs. From the third inning on, however, Tanaka settled into a groove, retiring nine in a row through the fifth inning, with a rain delay ending the game for the night following the top of the sixth. In all, the right-hander surrendered three runs on four hits, striking out two and relying primarily on groundouts. Although he tossed just 72 pitches, he will not continue in this game, as the rain has pushed the resumption to Wednesday evening.--RDelgado
