Lucas Giolito Working On New Pitch
4 years agoChicago White Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito has been working on a new pitch that he refers to as the "downer" with new pitching coach Ethan Katz. The pitch is a modified curveball. "It's like a 12-6 curveball, but it just goes down," Giolito said. "It comes out of my hand almost like a slider variant." Already having thrown six or seven bullpens this offseason, the right-hander's primary goal in 2021 is to throw 200 innings. Adding a new pitch and working with Katz, whom Giolito has worked with since high school, could have the 26-year-old ace primed for another outstanding campaign in 2021. Giolito's 2020 season wasn't that far off from his 2019 breakout, just with a smaller sample size. His skills are on the rise, and as long as he can continue to limit the long ball, he'll once again be a fantasy ace worth grabbing as early as Round 2.
