Jose Quintana 2020 Outlook: Don't Forget About This Innings-Eater
5 years agoJose Quintana was once one of the most consistent pitchers in baseball, but he’s fallen on hard times with consecutive disappointing seasons with the Cubs. He posted a 4.68 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 6.2 BB%, and 20.4 K% in 171.0 IP in 2019. However, these inflated numbers are largely due to poor luck on balls in play and stranding baserunners, as demonstrated by his .326 BABIP and 65.9 LOB%. Despite his overall struggles, Quintana showed flashes of brilliance last season. From June 29th to August 30th, he posted a 3.08 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 4.5 BB%, and 23.8 K% in 64.1 IP. This stretch included a dominant six-inning start on August 13th, where he was able to strike out 14 Phillies. It’s encouraging to see this type of performance in a decent sample size. Quintana is currently being drafted at 305 ADP, behind pitchers like HR-prone Dylan Bundy. Let’s not forget that this was once a perennial innings-eater who posted four consecutive 200+ IP seasons from 2013-2016. Entering his age-31 season, Quintana can still help your fantasy team as a back-end, high-volume option.
