Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson (face) skated with the team Wednesday for the first time since taking a slap shot to the head in a game in December. It's a positive sign that he was able to work with the team again, but Carlson wore a non-contact jersey and he still isn't close to returning to the lineup. "This is the beginning of the process as far as him joining our team. Still off in the distance but nice to have him out there," said Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette after Wednesday's practice. Carlson notched 21 points in 30 games before getting hurt in a clash with the Jets right before Christmas. Trevor van Riemsdyk and Rasmus Sandin currently make up Washington's top defensive pairing, with the latter also on the first power-play unit.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller
