Joc Pederson's Extreme Splits Complicate Free-Agent Case
4 years agoFree-agent outfielder Joc Pederson is coming off a career-worst season in 2020 in 43 games, but he rebounded with a .991 OPS during the Dodgers World Series run in the postseason. Pederson is an extreme platoon bat and has slashed .239/.348/.505 (129 wRC+) with 121 home runs since 2015 against right-handed pitchers. Against lefties, he's slashed just .191/.266/.310 (59 wRC+) in his career. His career .269 expected wOBA against southpaws is among the lowest in baseball since he debuted in the majors. Pederson hit .273 against lefties in the minors, but he hit .216 against them as a rookie and then hasn't really faced them much since then. He has a grand total of 28 starts against left-handers in the last five seasons (277 plate appearances). Pederson remains value as a corner outfield bat with power, but it remains to be seen if his next team will give him a shot at an everyday role, including facing lefties more regularly.
