Jake McGee Earns Shaky Save Sunday, Closer Role In Flux
4 years agoSan Francisco Giants relief pitcher Jake McGee picked up his 12th save of the season in ugly fashion in Sunday's 5-4 win over the Dodgers. McGee, who had not seen a save opportunity in several games, entered the ninth inning up by three. Cody Bellinger reached first on a throwing error made by McGee to start the inning. He got a strikeout next, but then allowed a two-run home run to Albert Pujols to make the score 5-4. He then got the next two hitters out with another strikeout to seal the deal. McGee has now converted 12 of 14 save opportunities but has a mediocre 4.37 ERA on the season. Both of the Giants high-leverage relievers in Tyler Rogers and McGee have been inconsistent lately, so it would not be surprisingly to see a true committee approach from the Giants until one of them can provide consistent results at the end of games. This means that both carry fantasy value, but not nearly as much as they would if one had the clear closer role.
