Jacob deGrom 2021 Outlook: Consistent Fantasy Ace
4 years agoJacob deGrom followed up his second consecutive National League Cy Young award season by posting another gem in 2020. Despite the truncated 2020 season, deGrom remained a consistent fantasy asset who provided managers with elite strikeout totals and ratios. He finished the shortened season with a 4-2 record, a 2.38 ERA, a 0.956 WHIP, and a 104:18 K:BB in 68 innings pitched. Not surprisingly, deGrom supported this performance with elite advanced metrics. He posted a K% of 38.8% which was in the top three percent of MLB. deGrom also generated an excelleng whiff rate (top 2%) and posted an average fastball velocity of 98.6 mph which was in the top 1% in all of baseball. In addition, just as he did in 2019, deGrom minimized any damage by limiting walks (6.7% BB%) and home runs allowed (0.93 HR/9). Heading into 2021, deGrom remains a lockdown, matchup-proof fantasy ace. With a current ADP of eight, deGrom is justifiably being selected as one of the first two starting pitchers off of draft boards in 2021. Given his track record of recent dominance, he is once again a safe bet for elite strikeout totals with potential league-leading ratios in 2021. Win totals, which have alluded deGrom the past few years, may even see a boost in 2021 if the Mets can further bolster their solid lineup and address bullpen deficiencies through free agency/offseason moves.
