Jack Doyle 2018 Outlook: Strong Candidate For Target Regression
6 years agoWhile the 31st ranked Colt offense and the majority of Indy’s skill players suffered statistically without Andrew Luck under center last season, Doyle managed to achieve new career highs in targets (107), receptions (80), and receiving yards (690). He also became the first tight end to lead the team in catches since Dallas Clark (2009), which helped him finish as the TE7 in fantasy scoring. But even if Doyle and the Colts are not forced to relive last year's Luck-less existence, his output is destined to decline. He played on 909 snaps (88.3%), without any legitimate competition for touches at his position, but the arrival of Eric Ebron creates a nebulous outlook for both players. This uncertainty is intensified by the emergence of a new schematic approach that will be concocted by Frank Reich. During Reich's tenure as an offensive coordinator, his TE1s finished either second or third on their teams in targets. However, there is no guarantee the Doyle can capture the majority of opportunities over Ebron, who is still just 25, and provides the potential to deliver respectable production. This presents risk in selecting Doyle prior to his current ADP (132).
