J.D. Martinez's 2020 Season An Aberration?
4 years agoBoston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez had an uncharacteristic .389 slugging percentage in 2020 after posting a .619 mark from 2017-19. He hit 79 home runs in his first two years in Boston but only produced seven round-trippers in last year's shortened season. Martinez's hard-hit rate was down last year, but his 11.0 percent barrel rate was in line with his 2019 season (11.8 percent). The 33-year-old wasn't the only slugger who struggled last year, and he slashed a weak .213/.291/.389. He also wasn't able to watch in-game video due to COVID-19 protocols, which could've played a big part in his struggles. The fact that he's strictly a DH limits some of his appeal for fantasy managers, but there's profit potential at his current 95 ADP.
