Francisco Mejia 2019 Outlook: Switch-Hitting Catcher Has Upside At A Weak Position
6 years agoSan Diego Padres catcher Francisco Mejia has the upside to develop into one of the better hitting catchers in the big leagues. He was acquired from the Indians last summer in the deal that sent lefty reliever Brad Hand to Cleveland. The 23-year-old switch-hitter is the team's number three prospect and the 26th overall prospect in baseball heading into the 2019 season. In a small sample size of 32 games with the Indians and Padres over the last two seasons, Mejia hasn't had much success, hitting .174/.250/.333 with three home runs and nine RBI. He's struck out 22 times and walked six times. Mejia's aggressive approach at the plate could get him into trouble in the big leagues, but his natural raw hitting ability and penchant for finding the barrel and hitting the ball to all fields gives him upside in the average department at the next level. As his power matures (mainly from the left side), the youngster could approach the 20-homer mark over a full season as well. Playing time in SD could be a problem, however, if Austin Hedges remains on the roster. But the Friars have had Mejia work at third base and in the outfield, so if he's hitting, they'll find a place for him. Don't overspend for Mejia in single-catcher leagues, but if he's playing regularly, he has top-10 catcher upside in his first full season. Mejia currently has an ADP of 235.
