Four-Seamer Could Be Key For Frankie Montas
4 years agoOakland Athletics starting pitcher Frankie Montas posted a pristine 2.63 ERA with a 20.3 K-BB percentage and a 96th-percentile barrel rate (3.8 percent) in 2019, but he was also hit with an 80-game suspension for violating the league's drug program. The right-hander started strong last year but finished with a 5.60 ERA, a 15.6 K-BB percent and a 7.8 percent barrel rate. But he also had a 33.3 percent whiff rate on an improved four-seam fastball and allowed a .225 xwOBA on the pitch, which was the fifth-lowest mark among starting pitchers. Montas has relied heavily on his two-seamer/sinker despite yielding a .385 xwOBA on the pitch. The 27-year-old lost some velocity last year while dealing with a back injury as well, so a return to better health could make Montas a breakout candidate in 2021.
