Falcons Release Devonta Freeman
5 years agoThe Atlanta Falcons are releasing running back Devonta Freeman on Monday, according to a source. The move will save the team more than $3 million against the salary cap. Freeman ran the ball 184 times for just 656 yards (3.6 yards per rush) for only two touchdowns, although he did catch 59 passes for 410 extra yards and four scores. The 28-year-old played in just two games due to injury in 2018 and has seen his body wear down quickly after two Pro Bowl seasons with Atlanta in 2015 and 2016. He can still offer a backfield something in a part-time role, but Freeman's days of having RB1 upside are likely over. Brian Hill, Qadree Ollison and Ito Smith top the depth chart now, but Atlanta figures to address the position in free agency and the draft.
