Edwin Diaz 2023 MLB Player Outlook: A Dynasty League Stash Following Devastating Knee Injury
2 years agoThere wasn't a better closer in baseball than New York Mets right-hander Edwin Diaz in 2022. The Cleveland Guardians' Emmanuel Clase led all closers with 42 saves, but it was the Diaz show from there on out. The fireballer posted a 1.31 ERA while producing an eye-popping 0.90 FIP that paced all qualified MLB relievers by nearly a full run. With Diaz, the strikeout figures are unworldly as he led baseball with a 50.2% K% and 42.6% K-BB%, towering above the field in both departments. For good measure, he ranked in the 100th percentile in xERA, xBA, xSLG, and whiff rate. His 32 saves ranked seventh in baseball, but he's in an excellent position to compete for the league lead in 2023 behind a strong Mets club that tied for fifth in runs scored last season. Once our fourth-ranked reliever, Diaz, is set to miss most of the 2023 season after tearing the patellar tendon in his right knee following Puerto Rico's victory over the Dominican Republic on March 15. While his contributions this season will be limited or erased altogether, the right-hander remains a sure-fire dynasty league stash with the hope he can return to full health and dominance in the 2024 campaign.
