Dodgers, Mookie Betts Reach 12-Year Extension
4 years agoThe Los Angeles Dodgers and outfielder Mookie Betts agreed to a 12-year, $365 million contract extension on Wednesday, according to sources familiar with the deal. Combined with the one-year, $27 million deal Betts is currently on, the total comes out to 13 years and $392 million. The Dodgers will keep the former American League MVP from reaching free agency after the 2020 season. The deal tops the previous extension record of $360 million by Mike Trout and includes a $65 million signing bonus. It's a bit of a surprise that the Dodgers would fork out this much cash amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but Betts is considered one of the best all-around players in baseball, and he's also a top-five fantasy pick in his new home in LA. He's an elite leadoff hitter with power, speed and four Gold Gloves in right field. Betts slashed .295/.391/.524 for Boston in 2019.
