Deebo Samuel 2021 Outlook: YAC Machine Needs Consistency to Pay Off
4 years agoDeebo Samuel's 2020 was emblematic of the season for the league as a whole, mired with injuries and a COVID diagnosis that resulted in several missed games. In the time Samuel was on the field, it became clear that he has a specific role in Kyle Shanahan's offense - get the ball in his hands as quickly as possible and let him do all the work. Samuel's 2.3 aDoT was third-lowest among all receivers with at least 10 receptions. Consequently, his 12.2 YAC ranked highest in the NFL. Having a receiver who is highly effective with the ball in his hands and isn't reliant on shaking coverage downfield to earn receptions is a comforting feeling in terms of a weekly floor. On the other hand, his numerous injuries have to be a concern. Then there's the fact the 49ers are likely to transition to rookie QB Trey Lance at some point during the season. It's doubtful that the offensive philosophy will change much but it does make Samuel harder to pin down in terms of fantasy value. He is typically drafted just inside the top 100 overall, which is a reasonable range given his risk-reward profile.
