Darren Fells 2020 Outlook: Veteran Tight End Relying On Red-Zone Usage As TE2
5 years agoAfter going for career highs in targets (48), receptions (34), receiving yards (341) and touchdowns (seven) in his first year in Houston, the 34-year-old Darren Fells inked a two-year, $7 million extension in the offseason. He emerged as a strong red-zone weapon for the Texans late last year, and Houston will be looking for players to step up in the passing game in 2020 after DeAndre Hopkins was shipped out of town. Fells was quietly a top-15 fantasy tight end last season. He'll remain a red-zone weapon, but a healthy Jordan Thomas and Jordan Akins could also be involved and split repetitions with the veteran Fells. With most of his value tied to scoring touchdowns, consider Fells more of a low-end, touchdown-dependent TE2 target in deeper leagues.
Tampa Bay Signs Darren Fells To Their Practice Squad
3 years agoThe Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed free-agent tight end Darren Fells to their practice squad on Wednesday. He is expected to be elevated to the 53-man roster before Sunday's game against the Washington Football Team. The 35-year-old was targeted just five times in seven games for the Lions, catching four passes for 43 yards. Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski (back) is dealing with a back issue, and his status is up in the air in Week 10. The former Detroit Lion is behind Gronk, O.J. Howard, and Cameron Brate on the tight end depth chart. Despite Gronk being banged up, Fells would provide Tampa Bay depth at tight end but is not on the fantasy radar in 2021.

Darren Fells Granted His Release
3 years agoDetroit Lions veteran tight end Darren Fells asked for and was granted his release on Monday, according to a source. Fells will go on waivers and could provide an interesting option for tight end-needy teams. The 35-year-old was targeted just five times in seven games for the 0-8 Lions, catching four passes for 43 yards. With Fells moving on, the Lions has Rashod Berry and rookie Brock Wright as options to elevate from the practice squad to the active roster to provide depth behind T.J. Hockenson. Detroit was on their bye in Week 9, but Fells was a healthy scratch in the Week 8 blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He can provide some veteran depth with another organization, but he's unlikely to suddenly become fantasy relevant.
