David Robertson 2019 Outlook: Lack Of Guaranteed Saves Creates Buying Opportunity
6 years agoDavid Robertson has consistently proven to be a reliever worth owning in most fantasy leagues. This didn't change in 2018, as the right-hander compiled a 3.23 ERA and 3.09 xFIP over 69 2/3 IP with the Yankees. His 9.2% walk rate was a shade higher than you might want from a shut-down reliever, though his 32.2% strikeout rate went a long way toward easing the pain. Unfortunately, a lack of saves prevents Robertson from joining the elite fantasy relievers. He totaled only five saves last year due to the strength of the Yankees bullpen, and early reports suggest that he won't be the exclusive closer in Philadelphia despite signing a two-year, $23 million contract with the club in the offseason. That said, it isn't hard to see him reaching at least double-digit saves with some vulture wins from high-leverage appearances in the late innings. The Phillies are also light on other closing candidates, creating an opportunity for Robertson to seize the job outright. Should he end up serving as a traditional closer in 2019, the profit potential on his ADP of 291 is massive. Robertson is a low-risk, high-upside fantasy choice.
