Carlos Martinez's Season Could Be Over
3 years agoThe St. Louis Cardinals moved starting pitcher Carlos Martinez (thumb) to the 60-day injured list on Friday. Martinez is currently exploring surgical options to fix a torn ligament in his thumb. Even if the right-hander doesn't undergo season-ending surgery, he now won't be able to return until sometime in September. On top of that, Martinez hadn't been of much use in most leagues with his 6.23 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and career-low 15.7 percent strikeout rate. At this point, if you were hoping for a turnaround in the second half in deep mixed leagues, you can now cut bait. Martinez's injury probably guarantees that Johan Oviedo, who was sent down on Thursday, will be back in the starting rotation at some point in the second half. However, he's also been mostly unreliable for owners in deeper leagues.
