Carlos Martinez Could Pitch In Relief Again
6 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Carlos Martinez, who saw action as the closer late last year, could be moved to a relief role again in 2019. Pitching coach Mike Maddux said he "liked him out of the bullpen a lot." Martinez is slated for a rotation role right now, but the Cardinals have flexibility with so many potential starting options in spring training. The right-hander was also on the disabled list three separate times last year due to various arm injuries, so they might be worried about his long-term durability. Martinez had a 1.47 ERA and 1.20 WHIP as a reliever in the final six weeks of the season and held hitters to a .523 OPS in 18 1/3 innings. His fantasy stock is down because of injury concerns, but he's a mid-round sleeper if he bounces back and stays healthy, and he could also turn into a solid fantasy closer.
