Cardinals Use Transition Tag On Kenyan Drake
5 years agoThe Arizona Cardinals placed the transition tag on running back Kenyan Drake on Monday, according to a source. The move allows the team to match any offer that Drake receives in free agency. If the Cardinals decline to match an offer, they would receive no compensation. The estimated transition tag for running backs in 2020 is around $10 million. Traded to the Cardinals from the Dolphins at midseason last year, Drake rushed for 643 yards (5.2 yards per carry) and eight touchdowns in eight games, adding 171 yards on 28 catches. The difficult part is that David Johnson is set to count $14 million against the salary cap, and they can't really move on from him. Drake and Johnson would likely share the backfield if they re-sign Drake, but he earned the lion's share of the touches after his work in 2019 to finish the season.
