3 years agoNew England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton is expected to return to practice on Thursday after he works his way back from his COVID-19 misunderstanding, according to head coach Bill Belichick. Unfortunately for Newton, his absence on Wednesday allowed rookie Mac Jones to shine, as the Alabama product had his best practice in a joint session with the New York Giants. Jones went 12-for-14 in 7-on-7 drills and 22 of 26 in 11-on-11 work. During one stretch, the rookie completed 18 straight passes to seven different receivers. It was previously believed that Newton would enter Week 1 as the starter, but it remains to be seen if Jones' late surge will change that. Newton has more upside than most as a QB2 streamer because of his rushing ability (12 rushing TDs in 2020), but he'll need to perform in order to hold off Jones during the regular season.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
