6 years agoTampa Bay Rays hitter/pitcher Brendan McKay will make his hitting debut against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday. He threw six scoreless innings versus the Texas Rangers on Saturday. McKay wasn't too impressive with the bat in the minors, but we'll see what he can do in the MLB. He'll bat eighth and serve as the designated hitter versus righty Thomas Eshelman. McKay should be added in just about every fantasy league.--Andy Webb - RotoBaller

1 year agoTampa Bay Rays pitcher Brendan McKay (elbow) successfully threw live batting practice Tuesday, the first time he had pitched to hitters since August of 2022. The former fourth overall pick in the 2017 draft has endured several injuries, the latest being Tommy John surgery in September of 2022. McKay is at camp as a non-roster invitee and has a long way to get in shape to pitch in the big leagues again, but his pedigree and the way the Rays manage their pitching staff could make him worth monitoring throughout the season. He may have the opportunity to become fantasy-relevant at some point.--Connelly Doan - RotoBaller

2 years agoThe Tampa Bay Rays released former first-round pick starting pitcher/potential two-way player Brendan McKay Monday, per Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin. The 26-year-old lefty was the fourth overall pick in the 2017 draft. McKay made his big-league debut in 2019, pitching 49 innings with a 5.14 ERA. However, he has dealt with several arm injuries and hasn't played with the Rays since. Most recently, he had Tommy John surgery and will likely not pitch again until 2024. The Rays are interested in re-signing him to a new longer-term, minor-league contract.--Connelly Doan - RotoBaller

3 years agoTampa Bay Rays left-hander Brendan McKay (elbow) will go in for Tommy John surgery next week, according to the Tampa Bay Times' Marc Topkin. McKay threw just one pitch in a rehab start for Triple-A Durham in late August after recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome earlier in the season. The once highly-prized prospect hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2019. McKay is likely to miss all of the 2023 season with a 2024 return to the field the most likely timeframe for his recovery.--Matt T - RotoBaller

3 years agoTampa Bay Rays pitcher Brendan McKay (shoulder) exited his start with Triple-A Durham on Thursday after throwing only one pitch. He made his first appearance of the season Thursday after being reinstated from the 60-day injured list on August 23. The 26-year-old had been recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome surgery in November and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2019. The severity of McKay's injury is unknown, and he is considered day-to-day. The southpaw will undergo an MRI on Friday and is mainly a stash in dynasty leagues. Stay tuned.--Brad Camara - RotoBaller
