Brandin Cooks 2021 Outlook: The Unquestioned WR1 In Houston
4 years agoThere is little rationale for believing that Houston's passing attack can approach last year's ranking (fourth) and production (283.6 yards per game) even if Deshaun Watson would ultimately become available throughout a 17-game schedule. The uncertainty surrounding Watson's situation remains intact, while the systematic removal of talent from the Texan offense has reduced enthusiasm for selecting the remaining members of their depleted attack. However, these factors do not alter Brandin Cooks' status as Houston's primary receiving option. His name is affixed atop a modified depth chart that also contains Randall Cobb, Keke Coutee, Nico Collins, Isaiah Coulter, Chris Conley, Donte Moncrief, and Alex Erickson. Cooks easily led the Texans in targets during 2020 (119/7.9 per game), while also pacing the team in receptions (81/5.4 per game), receiving yards (1,150/76.7 per game), and air yards (1,359). The five-game suspension of Will Fuller was a factor, as Cooks soared to fifth among all receivers in targets per game (10.3), air yards (582), and percentage share of air yards (40.4), during Fuller's absence (Weeks 13-17). Cooks also collected over 26 percent of Houston's passing yards during that five-game span. Cooks' minimal competition for targets will be sustained this season following Fuller's departure for Miami. This has assured that Cooks will operate as Houston's unquestioned WR1. His proven track record as a yardage producer should also encourage fantasy managers, as Cooks has eclipsed 1,130 yards five times during his last six seasons. He also achieved those numbers while performing with four different franchises, so he is no stranger to quarterback changes. Cooks remains available in dynasty startup leagues until Round 10 (120/WR49) and is also a viable option at his ADP in best ball drafts (108/WR41).
