4 years agoKansas City Royals starting pitcher Brady Singer broke camp with the team in 2020, earning a spot in the rotation as a rookie. The former first-round pick rose quickly through the minors, giving the fledgling Royals little choice but to give him a shot. Singer impressed right away, limiting the Tigers and Indians to two runs over five innings in each of his first two starts. He had his share of ups and downs, like most rookie pitchers, but saved his best for last. Singer allowed a total of four runs on nine hits over his final four starts, spanning 24 innings. Of course, three of those four starts came against the Tigers and Indians, so a weak offensive division did play into his favor. He ended the year with a 4.06 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and nearly a strikeout per inning. Aside from natural maturation process, Singer could develop his game further by integrating his changeup more often. Singer is essentially a two-pitch pitcher, relying heavily on a sinker-slider combo to induce a high 53.7% ground ball rate. He didn't throw the changeup often but when he did, it came with good results (.167 BAA). More confidence in the pitch could keep batters honest in laying off the sinker and earn him even more Ks. A favorable home park and schedule play into his favor, making him a solid back-end rotation piece on fantasy squads. His early ADP of 220 in NFBC drafts makes him a low-risk SP.--Pierre Camus
