Blue Jays Willing To Go Big For George Springer?
4 years agoThe Toronto Blue Jays have given some in the industry the impression that they are willing to go to at least $125 million to sign free-agent outfielder George Springer, who was reportedly looking for well over $150 million last week. A $125 million deal would be the largest free-agent contract in Blue Jays history by $42.5 million, and there's a good chance that's not a hard limit. The Mets are more likely to go closer to $150 million for Springer under new owner Steve Cohen, which is why they're considered the favorites to land the outfielder. Springer's closest comparison is third baseman Anthony Rendon, who signed a seven-year, $245 million deal ($35 million average annual value) with the Angels last offseason heading into his age-30 season. Springer's deal will be shorter, but his AAV could be similar to Rendon's.
