Austin Nola Could Return As Soon As Thursday
San Diego Padres catcher Austin Nola (knee) went deep for the first time on his rehab assignment and caught seven innings for Triple-A El Paso on Monday. The 31-year-old also walked twice and is hitting .286/.412/.393 through 10 games at El Paso. Monday was the third time that Nola, who is on the injured list with a knee sprain, has caught a game during his rehab. He's expected to catch again Tuesday and could rejoin the Padres as soon as Thursday in Miami. Nola has been out since late May with a knee sprain and also missed time earlier in the year with a fractured hand. He has just 10 hits (one homer) in 46 at-bats (.217) at the major league level this year, but he's capable of providing useful power in two-catcher leagues when he's activated. Nola will share time behind the dish with Victor Caratini.
