Austin Meadows 2019 Outlook: Sleeper Potential In First Full Season
6 years agoTampa Bay Rays outfielder Austin Meadows was acquired alongside starter Tyler Glasnow in the trade that sent Chris Archer to the Pirates last July. Meadows, along with Glasnow, was one of Pittsburgh's top prospects. The 23-year-old saw his first taste of big-league pitching in 2018 and hit .287/.325/.461 with six home runs, 19 runs, 17 RBI and five stolen bases in just 178 at-bats (24 with Tampa). Perhaps the toughest thing about projecting his 2019 season is determining his playing time. Meadows should see regular starts alongside Tommy Pham and Kevin Kiermaier, but Avisail Garcia, Brandon Lowe and Guillermo Heredia will push for playing time and could spell Meadows in right field if he struggles. The former first-round pick in 2013 added 12 homers in the minors and 12 stolen bases at the Triple-A levels of the Pirates and Rays. He struck out 20.9 percent of the time in his 191 major league plate appearances, but his penchant for making consistent contact should keep that number lower moving forward. Meadows made contact 82.7 percent of the time and 93.0 percent when swinging at pitches inside the zone. The power should develop as he matures as well, making Meadows a very attractive commodity in dynasty leagues. In 2019, he's a good bet for 15-20 homers and 15-20 stolen bases as Tampa's primary right fielder. Those types of players are often drafted much earlier than you can snag Meadows for this spring. Consider him an attractive late-round sleeper and take advantage if your league mates are scared off by the fact that he doesn't have a full season in the show yet.
