Anthony Rizzo 2023 Player Outlook: Power Surge Makes Him Viable Corner Infield Option
Anthony Rizzo had a successful first season with the New York Yankees in 2022, slashing .224/.338/.480 with 32 home runs, 75 RBI, and six stolen bases. This was a different version of Rizzo than fantasy managers had seen before. He took advantage of the short right-field fence in Yankee Stadium and sold out for power, raising his average launch angle to a career-high 19.3 degrees. His batting average did suffer and was supported by a .214 BABIP. While it is likely that Rizzo will continue this approach at the plate in 2023, it may be reasonable to hope for a bit of BA regression, as he is a career .265 hitter. Rizzo is currently being drafted at about pick 156 overall, making him the 13th first baseman off the board. The position is deep, and Rizzo is currently going in a range of hitters with power potential, such as Giancarlo Stanton, Eugenio Suarez, Hunter Renfroe, and Max Muncy. This valuation seems fair depending on roster needs at that point in the draft, but Rizzo should serve as a solid corner infielder hitting in a strong Yankees lineup with a favorable home park.
