Alex Colome 2020 Outlook: White Sox Closer A Risky Option When Targeting Saves
5 years agoAlex Colome had a strong 2019 racking up 30 saves with a 2.80 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP and will enter 2020 as the clear favorite to close for the White Sox. The 30 saves represent the third time in the past four years Colome has saved at least 30 games with the only exception being 2018 when he was traded from Tampa Bay to Chicago. As reliable as Colome has been accumulating saves, he lags behind most top relievers in other categories relevant to fantasy baseball. 11 relievers have at least 80 saves combined over the last three seasons, every one of them averages at least 10 K/9 except Colome who sits at just 8.5 K/9. Fantasy owners also need to worry about his ratios regressing a bit as his FIP and xFIP were more than a full run higher than his ERA. Meanwhile, his WHIP was saved by a .215 BABIP which is well below his career mark and not sustainable based on his 90.7 MPH average exit velocity, 13th worst in the league. While Colome will enter Spring Training as the closer, Chicago beefed up their bullpen this winter by signing Steve Cishek to a bullpen that already had Jace Fry and Kelvin Herrera who have closing experience. As long as Colome is the closer, he is a solid RP to start in fantasy, but an ADP of 160 does not reflect the risk involved.
