Alex Cobb 2023 Player Outlook: Potential Value Worth A Pick At Current ADP Discount
2 years agoSan Francisco Giants starting pitcher Alex Cobb had an overall successful first season with his new team, going 7-8 with a 3.73 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 23.9% strikeout rate in 28 starts and 149 2/3 innings pitched. The 35-year-old spent two short stints on the injured list, first in April with a right adductor strain and then in June with a neck strain. Cobb's groundball tendencies played well in Oracle Park, as he gave up relatively hard contact but had a career-low 1.8-degree launch angle, resulting in a 3.15 xERA and 3.15 SIERA. He also managed to get decent strikeout numbers, thanks to a 16.2% swinging-strike rate on his split-finger fastball. Cobb is currently being drafted as the 95th pitcher at pick 247 overall. Age and therefore health are concerns, but Cobb has now produced solid numbers in two consecutive seasons and has the benefit of the Giants' pitching coaches. He could be a nice value at that price if he can produce 150 innings at the level he provided in 2022.
