Adolis Garcia 2023 Outlook: Awful Plate Discipline but Outstanding Fantasy Production
2 years agoAdolis Garcia delivered again in 2022, slashing .250/.300/.456 with 27 HR and 25 SB over 657 PAs. Despite that, you'll find him on many fade lists this season because his plate approach is terrible. His 40.3% chase rate indicates too much flailing outside the strike zone, while his 76.9 Z-Contact% suggests a propensity for swing-and-miss even if he gets a strike. The resulting strikeout numbers are ugly and create real batting average risk for fantasy managers, but there's a lot to like here too. Garcia's 96.4 mph average airborne exit velocity and 12.9% rate of Brls/BBE are both well above-average, so you can count on him to approach 30 HR. He also possesses plus wheels and was only caught stealing six times last year, making him a threat for a 30/30 season. As a cleanup hitter, Garcia gets plenty of counting stats as well. Garcia was substantially better in the second half (.266/.323/.479) than the first (.237/.282/.439), so it's not like pitchers figured him out as the season wore on. Garcia is a streaky player and you should prepare for a potential average hit, but 30/30 upside is too good to pass up at an ADP of 65.14.
