49ers Thinking About Future With Trey Lance
3 years agoSan Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance (knee), the third overall pick in this year's draft, is expected to return to backup duties after returning to a limited practice on Wednesday. Head coach Kyle Shanahan reiterated that Lance's health and readiness, not the team's record, would dictate how much he'll play and when he'll take over starting duties from Jimmy Garoppolo. "I get all the questions and everything like that, but we didn't draft Trey to just fix this year," Shanahan said. "We drafted him so he could be the quarterback here of the future." The Niners want Lance to develop and prefer not to throw him in the fire, which could potentially damage his development. It's clear the third overall pick has more pure upside than Jimmy G, and he's worth stashing in deeper leagues for his rushing prowess alone, but San Francisco is preaching patience.
