49ers Could Be Interested In Baker Mayfield
2 years agoSan Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch conceded this week that the timing of quarterback Brock Purdy's injured right elbow could force the team's hand to look for a veteran to throw into the mix at the position. The Niners aren't expected to break the bank, but SI.com's Albert Breer thinks they could go after someone like Los Angeles Rams impending free-agent QB Baker Mayfield, who has the experience in that type of offense and plenty of starting experience as an insurance policy for both Purdy and Trey Lance (ankle). All signs are pointing towards Lance being the Niners' Week 1 starter in 2023, providing that he's healthy in training camp. Mayfield has proven he's more of a backup in the NFL at this point. He threw for 2,163 yards, 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 12 games (10 starts) for the Rams and Carolina Panthers in 2022.
