Week 9 Running Back Rankings Outlooks

RJ Harvey, Denver Broncos

After putting up a hat trick in Week 8 against the Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos running back RJ Harvey will look to carry his momentum into a more difficult matchup on the road against the Houston Texans in Week 9. It was encouraging to see Harvey's usage in the red zone in Week 8, despite J.K. Dobbins seemingly being the clear lead back in the offense.

Harvey has also had more touchdowns than the "lead back" in the past two weeks, 4-0. With Broncos head coach Sean Payton entrusting Harvey with more responsibility in the offense lately, Harvey will provide standalone value and profile as RotoBaller's RB32 overall heading into Week 9.

J.K. Dobbins, Denver Broncos

Although Denver Broncos running back J.K. Dobbins has been averaging just over 16 touches per game through Week 8 of the season, he will face one of his most difficult matchups of the season as he travels to Houston to face the Texans. The Texans have only allowed 88.4 rushing yards per game so far this season, but they have allowed a middling seven touchdowns on the ground.

After seeing rookie running back RJ Harvey take some of the goal-line opportunities away from Dobbins in Week 8 against the Cowboys, it will be hard to predict that this won't be a trend in the future. As RotoBaller's RB22 overall on the week, start Dobbins as a volume-based RB2.

Tyjae Spears, Tennessee Titans

Tennessee Titans running back Tyjae Spears had a season high of carries in Week 8 against the Indianapolis Colts. The 24-year-old had nine carries for 59 yards and a touchdown, along with three catches for 23 yards on three targets. Spears finished with 17.2 fantasy points, marking the third straight game of having over seven fantasy points.

Heading into Week 9, Spears has a friendly matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers, who have allowed the sixth-most yards per carry (4.9) and the second-most rushing touchdowns (10) this season. Spears has averaged 5.5 yards per carry since returning from a high-ankle sprain and has earned more touches each week as he's gotten further away from his injury.

The third-year running back has an opportunity to stack back-to-back strong performances and become the number one option in a talent-hungry offense. Spears is an RB3 heading into Week 9 with a favorable matchup and is a reliable flex option for fantasy managers.
