Week 2 Quarterback Rankings Outlooks
Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy (shoulder, toe) is dealing with a left (non-throwing) shoulder and toe injury that "makes him uncertain" to play in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team will see how Purdy's practice week goes, but if he cannot play, backup Mac Jones would be in line to start this Sunday.
In addition to Purdy's injuries, tight end George Kittle suffered a hamstring injury in the Week 1 win over the Seattle Seahawks that is expected to sideline him multiple weeks, while receiver Jauan Jennings also injured his shoulder. Purdy went 26-for-35 passing for 277 yards, two touchdowns, and two picks in Week 1 but could now miss a juicy matchup against the Saints. If Jones is forced to start this weekend, he'd be a desperation low-end QB2 in superflex formats with limited weapons in the passing game.
Russell Wilson, New York Giants
Russell Wilson will get the start at quarterback for the New York Giants when they face the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2. Head coach Brian Daboll revealed on Monday that no change is imminent at the position, following a Week 1 performance that saw Wilson complete fewer than 50% of his passes at a paltry 4.5 yards per attempt. For the third season in a row, the Giants failed to score a touchdown in their season opener. New York traded up in the first round of the draft to select Ole Miss gunslinger Jaxson Dart, who will inevitably take over at some point this season.
While Wilson went largely undrafted in most fantasy formats, drafters who spent an early pick on Malik Nabers will have to wait at least one more week for a change. Nabers is still an every-week start on volume alone, but the Giants' offense as a whole will need to see an increase in efficiency to return his heavy draft cost.
Geno Smith, Las Vegas Raiders
Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith (hamstring) is expected to be fine moving forward, but coach Pete Carroll said he was dealing with some tightness last week, especially in the second half. Smith looked sharp overall, throwing for 362 passing yards and a touchdown while adding 10 rushing yards on two carries. He relied heavily on tight ends Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer, along with Jakobi Meyers, who was the clear top wide receiver after the retirement of Amari Cooper.
He'll need to mix in some of the young receivers going forward as well, but Smith looks to be in a good spot, starting once again for Carroll after their years in Seattle. Smith will get an extra day to rest his hamstring as well since the Raiders host the Chargers in the second game of Week 2's Monday Night Football doubleheader.
Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Republic's Theo Mackie writes that the Arizona Cardinals "tweaked some of their pass-protection schematics in an attempt to open up more scrambling lanes" for quarterback Kyler Murray up the middle this year. In the 20-13 Week 1 win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Murray went 21-for-29 for 163 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions while running the ball seven times for 38 yards. "I did think there were some high-leverage snaps in that game where he used his legs for our advantage, and that's what you want to see," head coach Jonathan Gannon said.
The 28-year-old ranked eighth among QBs in 2024 with 78 carries and finished fourth with 572 yards on the ground and five touchdowns. It sounds like Arizona might prefer Murray to run the ball even more in 2025, which would only raise his ceiling and floor as a weekly low-end QB1 in fantasy.
J.J. McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings
Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy went 13 of 20 for 143 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, leading his team to a 27-24 win against the Bears in his NFL debut. McCarthy looked overmatched early as the Vikings' stagnant run game left him facing frequent third-and-long situations. He had just 48 total yards at the half while taking two sacks, and then threw a pick-six early in the second half to put Minnesota down 17-6. McCarthy bounced back remarkably well after his costly mistake, delivering his best play in the fourth quarter when he accounted for all three of his touchdowns.
The Vikings' run game picked up on the subsequent drive and set up McCarthy for a 13-yard touchdown strike to receiver Justin Jefferson. He later hit running back Aaron Jones Sr. for a 27-yard touchdown on a wheel route on a really well-placed ball between two defenders.
Finally, he showed off his athleticism and impact as a runner with a 14-yard touchdown run on a read option to essentially ice the game. There will be plenty of growing pains for the 22-year-old signal-caller, but he showed some positive signs in this game. McCarthy will be set to make his home debut next Sunday night against Atlanta.
Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 17 of his 32 pass attempts for 167 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions during Sunday's Week 1 win over the Atlanta Falcons. He also led the team with 39 rushing yards. Although Mayfield posted an abnormally low yardage total and low completion percentage, he excelled otherwise, playing turnover-free football and taking just one sack.
All in all, it was a very rewarding day for his fantasy managers, and it even culminated in a three-point Buccaneers victory. Mayfield should continue to rank as a mid-range QB1 heading into next week's contest against the Houston Texans.
