NHL DFS Analysis and Picks for 10/24/23

We have finally made it! The 2023-2024 season is upon us and we welcome the next generational talent, Connor Bedard to the front and center! With many big moves over the offseason – Karlsson to Pittsburgh – and many signings during Free Agency, this season will make for yet another interesting race to Lord Stanley!

Tonight we have a 13-game slate and two teams playing on a  back-to-back: Buffalo and Montreal. The currently live top-5 highest implied team totals are: Florida with 4.1, Vegas with 4 New Jersey with 3.9, Los Angeles with 3.9 and Boston with 3.7. I will do my best to guide you through this thirteen-game slate on DraftKings and FanDuel starting at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

DISCLOSURE: Make sure to monitor the NHL news feeds for the latest player status and injury news.

DraftKings and FanDuel Goalies - NHL DFS Picks

Ville Husso - DK $8K || FD $8.4K

Opponent - Seattle Kraken

With many goalies on the slate, it is imperative that we find value and Ville Husso fits that bill. Seattle is middle of the pack when it comes to Shots For Per 90, however, they are the seventh-worst in Scoring Chances For Per 90 and the third-worst in Goals For Per 90. This gives Husso the opportunity to make 'safe' saves in hopes of reaching the Save Bonus on DraftKings -- 35+ --. Seattle is also experimenting with lines currently and will be lacking full chemistry which could result in less dangerous chances against for Husso.

Others To Consider (Cash/GPP):

  • Hill (DK $8.5K || FD $8.6K)
  • Gustavsson (DK $7.9K || FD $7.9K)

DraftKings and FanDuel Centers - NHL DFS Picks

Jordan Staal - DK $3K || FD $4.3K

Opponent - Tampa Bay Lightning

Welcome to the Staal Show. Tonight the Hurricanes get the privilege of playing against the third-worst defense in the league. Tampa Bay is second-worst in Shots Against Per 60, the third-worst in Goals Against Per 60 and the sixth-worst in Scoring Chances Against Per 60. Out of all goalies who have played three games or at least 120 minutes this season, Johansson is the tenth-worst in Goals Saved Above Expected Per 60 as well. However, the cherry on top is Staal’s matchups tonight. He is expected to see plenty of the top six for Tampa Bay who are notorious for their poor defense. With Staal just above minimum salary on DraftKings and expected to see plenty of Time On Ice tonight, it will take very little for him to reach value.

Ryan Johansen - DK $3.6K || FD $4.4K

Opponent - New York Islanders

Johansen is going to become a mainstay in the article pretty quickly if his salary continues to be affordable. The centerman is on a two-game point streak with 2 goals, 1 assist and 5 shots and over his last five games, he has 2 goals, 1 assist, 10 shots and 1 blocked shot. Today though will be arguably his best matchup of the season AND he now has Mikko Rantanen on his line. Johansen is expected to see plenty of the first and third lines for the New York Islanders and they are two of the worst defensive lines in the entire league. In total between the two lines, they give up over 60 Relative Scoring Chances Against Per 60 and over 45 Relative High-Danger Chances Against Per 60. Those are staggering numbers and seeing what Johansen has already done in giving matchups, at this salary, he is a ‘lock’ of the night.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP):

  • Hughes (DK $9K || FD $10.1K)
  • Draisaitl (DK $8.8K || FD $10.2K)

DraftKings and FanDuel Wings - NHL DFS Picks

Artturi Lehkonen - DK $5.8K || FD $6.5K

Opponent - New York Islanders

You want more Avalanche you say? Well, Lehkonen is the next man up, but on a different line. The winger has quickly returned to teammate Nathan MacKinnon and the two have a strong rapport. Last season in 55 games played together, they combined for 35 Goals For and had an Expected Goals For Percentage of 52.33. In Lehkonen’s last five games, he has 2 goals, 4 assists, 22 shots and 2 blocked shots. Unsurprisingly, the bulk of his point production in that window has come in the past few games when he went back to the top line. What is the main reason for him being highlighted though? He is featured because the top line and the second line – mentioned above – will see the two worst defensive lines for the Islanders. Despite the increasing salary, Lehkonen is one of the top value plays at Wing in the $5K range on DraftKings.

Alex Iafallo - DK $4.2K || FD $5.4K

Opponent - St Louis Blues

As either a one-off or a part of a stack, Iafallo is a top-value play tonight. The winger has been promoted to the top line with the slew of injuries in Winnipeg and he is also on the first power-play unit as well. In two games since the promotion, he has 2 goals, 1 assist, 9 shots and 2 blocked shots. In the three games prior, he had 1 goal, 7 shots and 1 blocked shot. It is very clear that the promotion has paid dividends for his value and he is no stranger to playing with top talent, after multiple stints with Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings. The Blue are currently getting bailed out by Jordan Binnington, but as many know, that never lasts. This season the Blues are the fourth-worst in Shots Against Per 60, the fifth-worst in Scoring Chances Against Per 60 and the ninth-worst in High-Dange Chances Against Per 60. Last year out of all goalies who have played a minimum of ten games, Binnington was the eleventh-worst in Goals Saved Above Expected Per 60 – -0.156 –. Lock and load Alex Iafallo.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP):

  • Toffoli (DK $6.5K || FD $6.8K)
  • Mikheyev (DK $3.4K || FD $4K)

DraftKings and FanDuel Defensemen - NHL DFS Picks

Jaccob Slavin - DK $4.1K || FD $5.5K

Opponent - Tampa Bay Lightning

Slavin’s value is beyond comprehension right now. In the defenseman’s last five games, he has 2 goals, 4 assists, 13 shots and 11 blocked shots. Add to the fact that he is going against a shoot-happy Lightning team and that he will see plenty of time against the top line makes him a candidate for defenseman of the slate. Slavin is currently averaging 2.5 shots per game and 2 blocked shots per game. Those are impressive numbers for someone who sees very little time on special teams and 80 percent of his contribution comes at even strength. In a fast-paced affair, it is not out of the realm for Slavi to continue his double-digit fantasy point production.

Alec Martinez - DK $3.9K || FD $5.4K

Opponent - Philadelphia Flyers

With a plethora of value options at defense tonight, it is hard to single out a few. However, Martinez has the matchup on paper to become a top-value option. Martinez is in a unique position. He is a part of the second pairing for Vegas, he quarterbacks the second power-play unit and he is on the top penalty-kill unit too. For under $4K salary on DraftKings and played in all three possible situations, is immense value. He has also produced double-digit fantasy points in his first two games of the season. In that same window, he has 1 goal, 1 assist, 3 shots and 5 blocked shots. The Flyers are in the top three in Shost For Per 60, leaving ample room for Martinez to maintain value tonight.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP):
