PROSPECT: Coby Mayo, 3B, Baltimore Orioles
ERIC CROSS' LATEST PROSPECT STASH RANKING: #5
CALL-UP ETA: May
ANALYSIS: Baltimore Orioles third base prospect Coby Mayo has been one of the best power hitters in the minor league this season and is nearing his major league debut. With Triple-A Norfolk, Mayo has posted a .313/.376/.642 line with 11 home runs, three stolen bases, and 31 RBI in 32 games.
This is Mayo’s second taste of Triple-A pitching, and he clearly seems to be settling in quite nicely. The number three prospect in the Baltimore system is on pace to smash his 2023 stat line of .290/.410/.563 and 29 home runs, which he tallied across Double and Triple-A last season. In addition, the 22-year-old showcased his incredible power with a four-game home run streak from April 28 to May 2.
The only concern with Mayo is that when he does receive a promotion, playing time may be hard to find. Currently, the Orioles have a crowded infield, with Jordan Westburg, Jorge Mateo, and Ramon Urias all rotating between second and third base. This can even be further complicated if Baltimore provides their top prospect, Jackson Holliday, with another shot at the major league level.
Mayo has elite power potential and is worth stashing in all formats, but do not expect an everyday player when he is promoted. He may be eased into major league action, which could hurt his value slightly in the short term.
