The Vegas Golden Knights paid a steep price to retain Alec Martinez's services for three more years. The 34-year-old defenseman's new contract will carry a $5.25 million AAV. It only became possible after the club flipped veteran goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, a fan-favorite and Vezina Trophy winner, to the Chicago Blackhawks yesterday. That move freed up $7 million in cap space. Martinez has played in parts of 12 NHL seasons and was rejuvenated after the trade from the Los Angeles Kings to Vegas back in 2019-20. Last season, he scored nine goals and recorded 32 points in 53 games. He was also a shot-blocking machine and recorded a +/- rating of 26. He should be a solid fantasy option on the blueline in 2021-22 but things could become dicey in the second or third year. --Marc Hulet - RotoBaller
