John Ross is a potential fantasy football wide receiver draft sleeper for the 2020 NFL season. Target him is a mid-to-late round WR value pick in fantasy drafts.
BALLER MOVE: Target Around ~170 Overall
CURRENT ADP: 180+ (Undrafted)
ANALYSIS: Why is it always that the greatest are those leaving us early? John Ross III played the first four games of the 2019 season for the Bengals, he got injured, was shut down until December, and then went on to play four more matches to close the year. Ross' start to last season couldn't have been stronger, with all of 270 yards and 3 TDs in just two games.
The truth about John Ross III is widely out there, though. He has battled numerous ailments during his tenure in the league, missing 24 games throughout his first three seasons as a professional. After capturing 16 receptions for 328 yards and three touchdowns during that first month of the 2019 season, the 24-year-old suffered a groin injury, keeping him off the field once again until Week 14. While he did manage to secure six targets for 84 yards during the overtime loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 16, he wasn't able to recapture the magic from earlier in the year.
That is not entirely worrying, though, as he closed 2019 with an average of 11.9 PPG in a very small sample of half-a-season in which he finished with a total 506 yards on just 28 receptions for an average of 18.1 (!) YPR. It's about health for Ross, really. The Bengals (smartly because of those concerns) have declined Ross' fifth-year option, so this is a make-or-break year for the receiver.
He will have his work cut out of him, however, as A.J. Green, Tyler Boyd, and the newly drafted Tee Higgins will all be looking for the attention of rookie quarterback Joe Burrow. As a last-round flier, though, Ross is one of those boom/bust plays worth risking a seemingly "free" pick. If it doesn't work, it is not that you paid that much for him. If he does, though, he could win you more than a couple of weeks throughout the year.
