The Philadelphia Phillies were soundly defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night after a lengthy rain delay pushed the game’s start time back over an hour and a half. The pitching staff was rocked, with Jake Arrieta, Drew Hutchison and Yacksel Rios combining to surrender 12 runs on 15 hits through seven innings. Entering the eighth, manager Gabe Kapler opted to rest his remaining relievers and sent out veteran infielder Pedro Florimon to get his club’s final three defensive outs of the night. The 31-year-old was the most successful pitcher of the night, retiring all three batters he faced and tossing 14 pitches. As if that wasn't enough, he stepped up to the plate in the top of the ninth and delivered a home run for good measure.--RDelgado
