When the New York Mets signed Jason Vargas this offseason, the thought was he would contribute as a solid innings-eater with a decent but not great ERA. Returning from a broken bone in his non-throwing hand, Vargas has made two starts and has achieved none of the above. Lasting 3 2/3 and 4 2/3 innings, respectively, Vargas has surrendered a total of 15 earned runs for an incredibly terrible 16.20 ERA. His six-run game against the Atlanta Braves last week actually improved his ERA after his nine-run disastrous debut in San Diego. Making his third start of the year on Tuesday in Cincinnati, the good news is nobody on the Reds has much experience against him. Third baseman Eugenio Suarez has one hit in four at-bats against Vargas, but that’s it. That’s not to say the Braves or Padres had much familiarity with Vargas, but it’s really the only positive we can draw for this start after his first two. It goes without saying that he shouldn’t be owned in standard fantasy leagues right now.--John Smith
