Quarterback (QB) Rankings Analysis

By Zach Wilkens (@LopsidedTrades)

My top ten QBs mostly follow the status quo. Rodgers and Luck are well ahead of everyone else and the only two QBs I would consider drafting early. You can’t beat two great QBs with an excellent set of receivers each! Even though I have Eli Manning right at his consensus rank of QB11, he is one of my favorite QBs to grab in my mocks so far. Eli and OBJ will do great things. I believe in OC Ben McAdoo as well and I expect he and Eli to build on last year’s success.

Once you get past the top 12 we start to see some big differences. I have Carson Palmer five spots ahead of the consensus at QB15. There is definitely some worry about his injury but he looked great in a small sample last year and he has the weapons to do it over a full season. He lacks a stud wide receiver - but Fitz, Floyd and Brown make a very solid trio, and then you have Andre Ellington who will catch plenty of passes as well.

Andy Dalton is another guy I’m high on. While I’m not in love with Dalton’s talent, I like just about everything else in that offense. The offensive line is very good and got better in the draft. So many of his receivers were hurt last year, including TE Tyler Eifert and pass-catching back Giovani Bernard. Everyone is healthy right now, and while Dalton will still struggle against tough defenses, he will be the ultimate streaming QB much like in 2013.

On the negative side, I think Colin Kaepernick won’t bounce back. I have him at QB20, four spots below his consensus rank. He finished as QB15 last year in standard scoring, and might finish around there this year as well, but he lacks the upside of guys like the aforementioned Andy Dalton and Sam Bradford who I have ranked ahead of him.

By Adam Sabol (@LopsidedTrades)

Every year Andrew Luck just gets better and better.  I foresee Luck and T.Y. Hilton building on their stellar 2014 campaign this season. Honestly, there's a 1A/1B situation with Luck and Aaron Rodgers.  These two are just going to be better than everyone else.

Russell Wilson's value as a scrambler and rusher inflate his floor, but the addition of Jimmy Graham finally gives Wilson an elite option to play with in the aerial game. Peyton Manning's mortality over the last quarter of the season almost assuredly cost someone a championship.  Until he returns to elite form, he's not a 2nd/3rd round guy.

Matt Ryan has an elite receiver in Julio Jones, and the Falcons look to improve under new coach Dan Quinn.  I don't expect a huge season from Ryan, but I do think he can hold down your QB spot this season without too much trouble. A disastrous 2014 season and the loss of Jimmy Graham put Drew Brees in a similar position as Peyton Manning.  He's definitely still a great quarterback, but his ADP should be much, much lower than it was in recent years.

Another year under offensive coordinator Bill Lazor (late of Philadelphia), as well as a young receiving corps with a lot of potential (2nd year WR Jarvis Landry and rookie DeVante Parker), bring hope in Miami. Ryan Tannehill is also capable of running for some extra points.  I think this year is a breakout season for the Dolphins' QB. Ben Roethlisberger probably won't have another 6-TD extravaganza game this season - but with the weapons around him on offense, he'll be a solid starting option at QB.

Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys should still be good this season.  Romo-Dez is absolutely a great QB-WR tandem, and should pay off in fantasy yet again. If the Panthers don't fix their offensive line issues, Cam Newton is looking at another rough season.  There's only so much you can do when you're being borne down on by 6 defenders.

Sleeper Potential QBs:

Teddy Bridgewater - Bridgewater came on strong at the end of last season, and with the return of Adrian Peterson to the offense, Bridgewater's throwing lanes should open up a bit.  The Vikings have playoff potential (especially after the mass exodus from Detroit's defensive line) and Bridgewater will play a significant part in this team's success.

Sam Bradford - This is of course predicated on Bradford's knees actually working and not being turned into confetti by Week 5.  However, if Chip Kelly and his sport science can keep Bradford under center, the Eagles' system can be good for the former No. 1 pick.

Marcus Mariota - He's earned the starting spot in Tennessee and reports from training camp say that he's accurate on every throw.  He probably won't be 2012-era RG3, but he might be worth a stash in a deeper league or a waiver wire claim.
