Week 5 Tight End Rankings Outlooks
Darren Waller, Miami Dolphins
Miami Dolphins tight end Darren Waller caught three of four targets for 27 yards and two touchdowns on Monday night against the New York Jets. In his first game since January 2024, Waller caught two touchdowns, including a highlight catch rising over Sauce Gardner. It was the third two-touchdown game of his career.
The 33-year-old moved well and looked good for the most part after missing a lot of time. He played only 25% of the snaps in the first week back, but that number should increase as he gets conditioned and acclimated. With Tyreek Hill injured and likely out for the season, other Miami pass catchers will have to step up, which could open a window for Waller. His value as a red zone threat is clear, and his role in the offense could expand. He'll be a name to consider on waiver wires this week.
Tyler Higee, Los Angeles Rams
The Los Angeles Rams listed tight end Tyler Higbee (hip) as a non-participant on their estimated practice report on Monday, according to Adam Grosbard of the Los Angeles Daily News. Meanwhile, fellow tight end Colby Parkinson (shoulder) was estimated as limited. Higbee was limited last Thursday and then didn't practice on Friday, but he still played through a questionable tag in the Week 4 win over the Indianapolis Colts and led all TEs on the team with a 55% snap share.
The 32-year-old caught just two of five targets for 25 yards, though, and won't be a realistic starting fantasy TE for Thursday night's matchup against the San Francisco 49ers if he's active. Through four weeks in 2025, Higbee has caught six of 11 targets for 62 scoreless yards. He hasn't caught a pass in two of his four games and should remain a low-volume TE2 with receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams hogging most of the targets from quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Taysom Hill, New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints are designating tight end Taysom Hill (knee) to return from the Physically Unable to Perform list this week, according to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team. To be clear, this doesn't mean that Hill is officially activated from the PUP or that he'll make his 2025 debut in Week 5 against the New York Giants, but only that he will be available to practice this week as the team opens up his 21-day practice window.
If the 35-year-old veteran isn't activated from PUP by the time his 21 days are up, he'll be forced to miss the entire season. In addition to Hill, fellow tight end Foster Moreau (knee) will return to practice this week. Hill is trying to make it back after tearing the ACL in his left knee in Week 13 of last year. It's unclear exactly how new head coach Kellen Moore will use the versatile offensive weapon when he's healthy enough to return, but Hill can remain on the waiver wire for now in 12-team fantasy leagues.
Dallas Goedert, Philadelphia Eagles
Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert led the team with only 37 receiving yards on Sunday in the 31-25 win over the hosting Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 4, but he found the end zone two times on four catches (four targets). The 30-year-old was tied with running back Saquon Barkley for the team lead in targets in another low-volume passing day for quarterback Jalen Hurts. Goedert had only one catch last week, but it also went for a touchdown, so he now has three scores in the last two games.
Volume will probably continue to be a problem for Goedert in an Eagles' passing attack that has been non-existent at times, but his value in the red zone for Philly shouldn't be understated. He scored on a shovel pass and an underhand flip for both of his touchdowns, so it was not conventional, but it counts nonetheless. Goedert should be considered a touchdown-dependent TE1 going into a tough Week 5 matchup against the Denver Broncos.
Jake Tonges, San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco 49ers tight end Jake Tonges (shoulder) caught his second touchdown of the season in the team's 26-21 loss to the Jaguars on Sunday. Tonges left the game just six plays in due to a possible shoulder injury but returned near the end of the first quarter. He finished the game with three catches on five targets and had 58 receiving yards, good for second-most on the team in Week 4. Tonges has emerged as the preferred pass-catching tight end in George Kittle's (hamstring) absence.
Both Ricky Pearsall (knee) and Jauan Jennings (ribs/ankle/shoulder) suffered injuries on Sunday, and on a short week (the 49ers face the Rams on Thursday), their status is up in the air. If either or both are limited or absent, then Tonges could see a greater target share than usual.
Sam LaPorta, Detroit Lions
Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta recorded three catches for 39 yards on four targets in his team's Week 4 win over the Cleveland Browns. LaPorta has now earned exactly four targets and failed to crack 40 yards in each of Detroit's last three games. For the season, the 24-year-old has logged 16 catches for 177 yards and zero touchdowns on 21 targets.
On the bright side, LaPorta is tied for second on the Lions in targets with running back Jahmyr Gibbs, behind only star wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown (32). Still, LaPorta has not been able to provide consistent fantasy production so far in 2025. He has a favorable matchup on paper in Week 5 against the Cincinnati Bengals, but LaPorta may need to find the end zone to be a worthwhile fantasy starter.
